Mass Incarceration in the United States

Even though the U.S. is 5% of the total world population, 25% of the world’s prison population is within our borders. Mass incarceration is especially harmful to the black community and people of color as they are disproportionally more likely to be arrested than their white counterparts.

Proposed solution: reduce prison sentences for violent criminals who are low risk.

Over 50% of the U.S. prison population is in for violent crime and they are in for a long time.1 There are studies that show long prison sentences are counterproductive and instead helping the prisoners reform their behavior is better. Most older prisoners show little public safety threat, long prison sentences are not a deterrent for future crimes, and the money used on the prisoners could instead be used on reform programs.
